Beneath the Stars Postcard
My friend Brianna Madia wrote to caption this image,
"Beneath the enormity of a blackened desert sky, we climb into our humble little home and flick the switch to our single strand of Christmas lights. We clamor over one another to reach toothbrushes and beat our pillows with closed fists to release the inevitable plumes of dirt-road-dust that seep in through the old cracked rubber door seals each day. We pile into each other’s arms and fall asleep somewhere within a sea of stars."
She flicked the switch and I slowed my breathing. Focusing on the air coming in and out of my lungs as my body quieted my mind quickened and I thought I was suffocating. The walls of the van seemed to press down into me and I was too afraid to make a peep. The most comfortable bed in the world was covered in dogs and soft blankets and it should have been heaven but I was claustrophobic so as the blood rushed to my head I snuck out to get some air and I took this picture. See, she had left the light on and Ella came to the door to look for me and when my heart stopped racing and my mind settled down I nestled in and slept better than I had in a month.
